PR Beach Resort, Samana DR National Park

The next day we went to visit a friend that we had met in St. Thomas, at a resort on the beach. We had a lovely day with Maggie, our new solo traveling friend. We got ready to sail to Crash Boat Beach, a place that Tim has visited several times. We departed for Samana, Dominican Republic on a 26-hour sail, our longest yet. I sat at the helm for 5 hours that night. The most amazing part of that trip was the sighting of a pod of Pilot whales, most likely giving birth, as they were surrounded by caretaking dolphins. We saw many other whales on that trip. When we arrived in Samana we anchored, checked in and immediately crashed out for the day. Whew! That was quite a trip.

The following day we sailed across the bay to the Parque Nacional Los Haitises, a beautiful sanctuary of ancient limestone, dense forest and mangroves. A myriad of birds and whales were seen on our dinghy rides through the winding waterways. We found our way to the Eco-lodge where we waded in meticulously fabricated swimming pools and waterfalls. Another grand adventure was found here.

After three days, we sailed to the main city of Samana, to check out of the country and to prepare for our stop in Luperon, and then on to the Turks & Caicos.
