We left at 3:00 a.m. and motor-sailed for 17 hours to Jolly Harbour, on the western side of Antigua. Our nighttime arrival was a bit difficult, but we had been there before. When we got close enough, we were able to see the bouys, so we followed them in. The captain found a spot, so he dropped anchor and we were there.
Jolly Harbour is kind of a sleepy town, about a fifteen minute ride to the marina. There is a well-stocked grocery store there, and several restaurants. They are in the process of remodeling the business center. All of the offices, stores and restaurants are being moved nearby, to the container buildings that have been set up. They will rebuild the old building and move everyone back there when it's completed. It seems to be an up and coming area.
Norm set up a tour for us for the following day.
Jemoye picked us up promptly at 9:00 in his beautiful Honda van, stocked with drinks and snacks for our day touring Antigua. He took us to Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in English Harbour. It was built in the early 18th century and abandoned by the British Royal Navy in 1889. The dockyard is named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who lived in the Royal Navy Dockyard from 1784 through 1787.
We went to the overlooks at Piccadilly, Grace Bay and Shirley Heights. We saw Eric Clapton's homes and had lunch at Loose Cannon Restaurant. It was a wonderful seven hour tour. Thank you, Jemoye!
After Jemoye returned is to the meeting place, we dinghyed back to the boat and rested. Later, we went for our farewell dinner, drinks and dessert at The Fox House. It was delicious!
The next day, Jemoye drove Norm and Anne to the airport for their trip home. It was a fabulous eleven days! We will miss them! So long, 'til next time! 🥰
